Run, jog or walk your way to health

SCOTLAND'S men are being urged to ditch their remote controls for their running gear and take part in the fifth annual Men’s Health Forum Scotland 10k.

Runners of all abilities from across the country gathered at the launch in January held at the Palace of Art at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow.

Real Radio presenter Mark Martin and Andy Kerr MSP attended the event and pledged to take part in this year’s 10k.

The event, which is the only men-only 10k in the UK, takes place on June 20, which is Father’s Day.

Breathing Space Scotland is event partner for the MHFS 10k for Men.

Participant numbers have been growing year-on-year and in 2010, organisers hope to attract up to 5000 entrants.  Last year, more than  3000 men of all abilities aged from 15 to 83 took part.

The MHFS is determined to get men thinking about the importance of improving their health.

Mark Ward, national co-ordinator for the Men’s Health Forum Scotland, said:  “The Men’s Health Forum Scotland wants to encourage as many men from throughout Scotland as possible to take part in the 10k for Men, whether they walk, jog or run.

"The buzz and excitement generated on the day is overwhelming, but it’s the health benefits of taking part in the event which make the whole process worthwhile."

Tony McLaren, National Coordinator of Breathing Space Scotland, said: “Breathing Space is delighted once more to sponsor the MHFS 10k for Men for the fifth year in a row. The race is a fun and rewarding way for men from around the country to help keep themselves not only physically well – but mentally well."

Real Radio Overnight’s Presenter Mark Martin said, “I’m really looking forward to taking part in the 2010 Men’s Health Forum Scotland 10K.  Every runner has their own story and reasons for running this race. Personally, I like a good challenge. It's the start of a new decade and I think turning over a new leaf to get fit can only be a good thing."

Andy Kerr, MSP, said: "Preparing for the MHFS 10K is about taking those small and crucial steps towards better physical and mental health, it is about spirit and camaraderie and I look forward to the run every year.”
