Rural Health Week
Responding to a changing world
Rural Health Week takes place on 18th-24th September. The aim of the week is to raise the profile of rural health issues locally, regionally and nationally. This year the theme is 'responding to a changing world'.
Richard Leckerman, Breathing Space National Development Officer said "We are living in times where people are expected to take greater responsibility for their own health. This presents problems for local communities who already have a number of challenges which arise through their rurality and remoteness. It's important to highlight the special requirements of these communities and make sure that awareness of easily accessible services such as Breathing Space and Living Life, is high."
Throughout August and September Richard is taking part in a number of awareness raising initiatives throughout the country. This includes visiting GP practices in Dundee, hospitals and schools in Islay and using state-of-the-art video conferencing facilities through the Scottish Centre for Telehealth to discuss the work of Breathing Space and Living Life with mental health teams in Wick and Thurso.
"By using new technology such as video conferencing, we are more able to respond to changing needs and ensure that service providers are fully aware of services such as Breathing Space and Living Life. Its important that the message to open up when you are feeling down comes across to rural communities." said Richard.
