The season to be jolly?
Christmas can unwrap all sorts of emotions
The festive season is upon us, bringing a sense of anticipation and excitement as we look forward to spending time with loved ones, sharing gifts, and indulging in delicious food.
However for some people the arrival of the Christmas holidays are met with a feeling of
dread as they struggle to cope with the financial and emotional demands that this time of year can bring. Family tensions, money worries, relationship difficulties, loneliness and grief can all snowball into an overwhelming sense of anxiety and depression that is only magnified by the glittery frivolity taking place all around.
Tony McLaren, National Coordinator with Breathing Space Scotland comments “A lot of people feel they’re living under tremendous pressure at this time of year and for many the financial and emotional excess of the festive season is compounded by the effects of the winter blues.
“Feelings of isolation are accentuated at Christmas time where the traditional image of family celebrations can be in stark contrast to the loneliness experienced by people living on their own or single parents trying to make ends meet. It’s a time of reflection on the year’s gone past and for people grieving the loss of a loved one it can be particularly difficult to keep.
“It’s important that people take time to care of their own emotional wellbeing at this time of year. Try to focus on what matters most to you – you will probably find that that is your family and friends.
“If you’re struggling with the family and endless visits from in-laws, then take some breathing space of your own. Go for a walk in the fresh air, play a game with friends or family members to diffuse any tension, just do what you can to relax and enjoy this time.
“Remember if you are experiencing emotional distress during the festive season and feel you can’t talk to your family or friends, then call a phone line such as Breathing Space, our advisors are available every day right through the festive holiday."
Opening Hours: 6pm – 2am (Monday – Thursday) and 24 hours at weekends (Friday 6pm – Monday 6am).
REMEMBER BREATHING SPACE DAY - 1st February 2008 - a time for everyone in Scotland to STOP and take some time away from the busyness of modern day living.
