Spring out of step
Feeling down as clocks go forward?
This weekend sees the beginning of Summer Time with the clocks going forward on Sunday 30th March.
The clocks change may go relatively unnoticed for many people however for those who suffer from low mood and depression the change in seasons can actually heighten their feelings of hopelessness and despair.
Tony McLaren, National Coordinator of Breathing Space Scotland explains “Many people have the preconception that the brighter days will automatically lead to an increased feeling of happiness and wellbeing. Unfortunately for some people suffering from depression, the advent of spring and the rebirth of new life all around can actually intensify their sadness and they may feel frustrated that their mood hasn’t brightened despite the improvement in weather and longer daylight hours.
“There is no clear cut explanation for why some people continue to feel unhappy. After months of hibernation the onset of bright spring days may illuminate their feelings of bleakness especially at a time when all around people are jovially anticipating summer which can be in stark contrast to the darkness that they may be experiencing and thus leaves them feeling even more isolated.
“That’s where a service like Breathing Space can help. We have specialist phoneline advisors available every day of the year on 0800 83 85 87. Breathing Space advisors can listen and offer advice, or suggest people who can help with more specific problems in the caller’s local area or people can access advice and guidance via our website www.breathingspacescotland.co.uk”
