Curtain goes up on mental health

Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival 2008

Breathing Space is delighted to be a lead partner in this year’s Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival which takes place across Scotland from the 1st – 19th October 2008.

Now in its second year, The Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival - the largest of its kind in the world - will present a programme of over 100 events encompassing music, film, theatre, literature, visual art and comedy. The multi-arts festival aims to engage audiences and tackle stigma by exploring the relationship between mental health and creativity, celebrating the artistic achievements of people with experience of mental health issues and promoting positive mental health and wellbeing.

Tony McLaren, National Coordinator of Breathing Space said “Breathing Space is delighted to sponsor the second annual Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival and its extensive programme of events taking place throughout Scotland.

“People have been turning to the arts for centuries for their own ‘breathing space’ and in today’s fast paced world it’s more important than ever for us all to remember to take some time away from the stresses and strains of modern living in order to maintain positive mental wellbeing.

“We support the Festival in taking mental health issues to the national stage and see it as a valuable contribution in working towards a mentally flourishing Scotland.”

Rod Jones, guitarist with Idlewild, said: "The festival is great for raising awareness of organisations like Breathing Space, a confidential phoneline which provides an invaluable service, and which I've used myself. There are a vast array of people out there that need help. Mental health issues can affect anyone, it doesn't matter whether they're a member of a band, someone working at a restaurant or the Prime Minister."
