Festive Stress

The festive season is upon us and images of happiness and perfection abound. Yet the reality is that for some people the Christmas and New Year period can be a difficult time as they struggle to cope with financial and emotional demands.
Family tensions, money worries, relationship difficulties, the effects of the winter blues, loneliness and grief can all snowball into an overwhelming sense of anxiety and depression that is only magnified by the glittery frivolity taking place all around.
Tony McLaren, National Coordinator of Breathing Space Scotland comments “Breathing Space traditionally sees an increase in calls to the phoneline and visits to our website during the winter months. This year in particular we’re starting to see the impact of the economic downturn - financial difficulties, unemployment, relationship breakdown – all of which are pushing some people to emotional breaking point.
“In addition Christmas and New Year can be a nostalgic and reflective time for many people looking at the year gone past and for those who have experienced a bereavement it can be particularly poignant.”
Breathing Space Scotland advocates the importance of everyone taking time to care for their own emotional wellbeing. It can be as simple as going for a walk in the fresh air, playing a game with friends or family members to diffuse any tension, anything to help relax and keep a sense of balance.
Tony adds “Remember if you are experiencing emotional distress during the festive season and feel you can’t talk to your family or friends, then call a phoneline such as Breathing Space, our advisors are available every day of the year (24 hours at weekends and 6pm – 2am (Monday –Thursday) on 0800 83 85 87.“
