Dad's the word
On Sunday (19th June), men across Scotland will be treated to cards and gifts from their offspring as the nation celebrates Father's Day.
Receiving a home made card to the "Best Daddy in the World" is touching for even the most macho of men and is a good opportunity for children to fuss over their dad and give him some of the spotlight for a day.
Tony McLaren, Service Coordinator with Breathing Space in Scotland considers why Father's Day is a good time for men to take some Breathing Space: "Scottish men are traditionally the strong, silent type when it comes to talking about their feelings. Whilst women find it second nature to talk openly about their relationship difficulties, financial problems and the pressures of parenting, men tend to keep a lid on their feelings. Perhaps they don't want to let go and show their true emotions for fear of upsetting their loved ones or losing face. It's important for partners and friends to be aware that men need support too, even though they might be the last to admit it.
"Father's Day is a good chance for guys to take some Breathing Space with their family by going on an outing or enjoying a nice meal together. It's vital that we all learn to take some Breathing Space from our everyday lives to keep our mental wellbeing in tip top condition throughout the year."
Breathing Space is available every day of the year from 6pm – 2am on free phone number 0800 83 85 87 and currently receives around 500 calls per week, many from men who are experiencing low mood and depression.
One young dad told us how important it is for him to get some Breathing Space "Both myself and my partner hold down full time jobs and life can get a bit hectic at times, especially during the school holidays when it's a daily juggle between work and childcare commitments. I play at 5 asides with my workmates at least once a week and find it really helps to keep the stress at bay and is a good chance to let off some steam and afterwards have a catch up on what's happening."
