Spring out of step despite clocks going forward

This weekend the clocks will go forward to mark the beginning of Summer Time.  For many this will mean no more than a shorter Sunday lie in or an embarrassing late arrival to Sunday lunch at the in-laws. However, for people who suffer from low mood and depression, the clocks springing forward can actually heighten their angst.

Tony McLaren, Service Co-ordinator with Breathing Space explains “Many people have the preconception that the brighter days will automatically mean an increased feeling of well-being.  Unfortunately for some people suffering from depression, the advent of spring and the rebirth of new life all around can actually intensify their sadness and they may feel frustrated that their mood hasn’t brightened despite the improvement in weather and longer daylight hours.

“There is no clear cut explanation for why some people continue to feel unhappy.  After months of hibernation the stark contrast of bright spring days may illuminate their feelings of bleakness especially at a time when all around people are jovially anticipating summer which can be in stark contrast to the darkness that they may be experiencing and thus leaves them feeling even more isolated.

“Many callers to Breathing Space are feeling the effects of depression and often find it hard to pinpoint the cause for their low mood.  Sometimes the thought of sharing feelings with friends or family can seem such a difficult prospect that people prefer to pretend everything is okay.  That’s where the Breathing Space team can help, we have specialist call advisors available every day of the year from 6pm – 2am (0800 83 85 87 – Minicom: 0800 31 71 60). Call advisors can listen and offer advice, or suggest people who can help with more specific problems in the caller’s local area.”
